Tausug community have its distinct tradition different from other customs of the people in Likusantara; one of the known but unique practices is the parakala’ pagtiyaun or wedding celebration or party. This tradition though not constantly adhering to the old practices, the differences just slightly on some adapted practices and initiatives of the doer.

Most of the time, this tradition is carry out at home; the relatives, neighbours friends and both families of the bride and groom are invited to make the party jocund. Most of the closest kin are among the strong supporter to prepare for any work, specifically on carpentry, kitchen, and decor. In the carpentry, the closest kin and nearby neighbours who have skills would help to repair the house, bridge and other parts which serve as importance to the occasion. The kitchen matters would be entrusted to a member of the family, kin or neighbours who have skills to cook Tausug delicacies. Sometimes the family would hire Tausug cook enable the food to be prepared would satiate the mangluluruk or attendees.  The decor would be hired which includes to beautify the bride and groom.

The parakala’ pagtiyaun is a form of social gathering and getting together of the member of the families and people in the community. Through this occasion, we can witness the strong fabric of a Tausug community, where every attendee brings his earnest support such as gift or cash in an envelope. If the attendee invited by the family of the groom, he must at least bring a cash in an envelope, the amount would depend on the amount owed to him by the invitee. But if the invitation is from the bride’s family the attendee should have at least a gift to present. Though giving of gift to the bride is not oblige by the bride’s family, giving a gift has become a newly trend in Tausug wedding.

The important part of this occasion is the magsasagina or the person welcomes the attendees, so that every attendee would feel the importance of their presence.

On the night side, the wedding party would be resumed with the presence of local band, organ (refers to a group who played traditional music of the badjao [igal-igal] with a keyboard instrument), Maggagabbang [Traditional music sang by minimum of four persons [setting face to face] in front of xylophone made from bamboo and violin] and other traditional entertainer.

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim

People are not all the same in matters on temporal aspect. Each of them has their respective ambition, like, favourite and taste. Sometimes a person viewed this life depends on the environment where he lived, faith he believed, family he rose and school where he educated. Despite of the richness of human’s activities and perceptions; they are all bounded by two opposite traits - “Good and bad”. A baby born into this world innately has these attributes. If a child bring up in a good family his future would be filled with handsome attribute, but if he is bring up in a bad family a big tendency he would become bad.

According to Tausug phratries, Sultanate of Sulu before the advent of foreign invaders was already a haven of peaceful people because they had brought up within the environment where Islam serves as the official religion. Their every day transaction concentrated on livelihood and observed the basic teachings of Islam.  The Tausug became peaceful people because of the deep influence of mystical practices introduced by the Ahlul Bayt in the Sultanate of Sulu. The teachings of Islam introduced to the Tausug were the same as what had been practice by Prophet Muhammad during his time – the teaching full of love and gentleness.  It is believed, after the demise of Prophet Muhammad 1400 years ago the trust to spread and exemplified Islam were handed down to his Ahlul bayt and other scholars and pious who practice moderation in their lives.

Hadhrat Zaid bin Arqam (Radhi Allahu Ta'ala 'Anhu) reported Allah's Messenger (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim) as saying, "I am leaving among you something of such a nature that if you lay hold of it you will not go astray after I am gone, one part of it being more important than the other: Allah's Book, a rope stretched from heaven to earth, and my close relatives who belong to my household. These two will not separate from one another till they come down to the Pond, so consider how you would act regarding them after my departure." (Sahih Tirmidhi)

As the invaders disturbed the Sultanate of Sulu the some peaceful Tausug became hawkish. The word “Kafir” was anathema to their ears. The garrison of the enemy had become their easiest portal to heaven, as simple as tax thing the Tausug in the past did not crouch to the demand of their enemy. It’s not that the Tausug became warlike because that’s how Islam taught them to be, but it was the right of the Tausug to do so enable to defend their homeland from interlopers. To love a country is a basic right of each people, any countries regardless of religion if infiltrated by foreigners they really do the same as what the Tausug were doing  in defending their country.

Uncle Sam's soldiers proudly standing in front of Innocent Tausug civilians corpse
How the world hegemony of today mould the mind setting of the people of the world. They taught the people to do what is good, but their activity throughout the world is antagonist to what they relay. They say that the Abu Sayyaf is a terrorist, but during the Bud Dahu massacre where Thousand of Tausug including women and children died on the creek through American hands but did they consider those act as a form of terror? Terrorism of today is regarded as the best weapon enable to justify the infiltration to any part of this world – this is a general view. The most important, you can form or train a religious like group, afterwards put them in their respective place for the continuous operation. From 5 to 10 years span the group formed will be vanished from this world but the master plan of the great deceivers successfully done.

What does this mean to you?
American soldiers nowadays are plenty in Jolo Islands. The innocent Tausug thought this Uncle Sam’s soldiers back to Sulu for humanitarian purposes - this have been proven through projects under USAID. Though the Tausug masses regard it like that, in the future this program would become another problem in this part of the world - for there's no reason for the American to spend billions of dollars without any benefit out of it in return? The worries loom because there are thousands Tausug out there who have similar thinking as Panglima Hassan and other Bud Dahu martyred – who loved to die in battle for the sake of justice and freedom. If for instance, the American forces came with the agenda to usurp what is due to the Tausug and the Sultanate of Sulu, another Bud Dahu massacre would be happening in Jolo Island? Hopefully, this would not be happening.

Should the American government truly well educated and champion of democracy they must show to the world their being human and civilized citizens on earth. If it is right, good only begets good the American must prove to the Tausug their sincerest action to ultimately help them to solve the root causes to their problem – restoration of the Sultanate of Sulu.

May peace reign once more in this part of the World!

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (radiyallahu anhu): “The Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) said: “On the night of my Ascension (Miraaj) I met Ibraheem (radiyallahu anhu) and he said to me: “Muhammad (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam), Convey my salaam to your people and tell them that Paradise is a vast plain of pure soil and sweet water and its trees cry: ‘Holy is Allah, all praise is due to Allah, there is none worthy of worship save Allah, and Allah is Great.” [at-Tirmidhee no: 1445] Continue reading...

Tausug are indeed impregnable followers of Islam. From small matters to bigger, it is their tradition to consult first the Takwim or Hijri Calendar before to launch any business, start to move to a newly house, to find the best day for marriage ceremony, to seek knowledge and many more. There are many secrets of choosing the right day and month in Hijra Calendar.

On this special Takwim month of Rajab has been chosen to remind the Muslim world and the Tausug in particular the value of this month. How this month contributes to the life of humankind? In Islam it was here where life of a man reach the stage of perfection, the Isra Wal Mi’raj, should the wisdom behind this journey well decipher by every sane Muslim and Mu’min.

May Allah shower His blessing to the Muslim Ummah and protect them from the fitna of Dajjal. May Allah’s strong support always with the Tausug who are supporting the restoration of the Sultanate of Sulu. May Allah inspire the Sultan of Sulu, PBMM Al-Sultan Bantilan Muizzuddin II with the divine knowledge. Ya Allah by the virtue of this month and the baraka of our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW, do accept our plea. Ameen

Poverty is indeed affecting the Sulu people in general. In my observation, at least 20% of the Sulu people who are living in a luxury life, this includes the local politicians, businessmen, and other professionals who succeeded with their career be it at home and in abroad. The left percentage would be shared by middle class and lower class citizens. But it is the lower class, who are the indigent, has a high share of percentage, let say 50% of 80. The remaining 30% would be for the middle class. Anyway, even not to use centile ranking, poverty is so high in this part of the world.

Bongao is a place where the destitute, who are the victims of corruption, could survive. The things would be needed to survive here is just to lift the shyness from the face [Hi ig in luman – Tausug Language] and tirelessly do the menial works in the market and in the wharf.

The town of Bongao is serving as a hub of business in Tawi-Tawi. Most of the commodities in the entire islands would be brought here. The mode of transportation to load the goods from the islands is lansa and small boat such as the basnigan and pump boat.

Tawi-Tawi is richer in seaweeds, fishes and copra. The dried seaweed such as the carrageenan [agal-agal], squids, octopus, yellow fin tuna, live fishes, lobsters and other sea products are delivered to Business Companies in Zamboanga City and in Sabah.  It was there in Zamboanga where the Tawi-Tawi products reach international companies.

The vessels arrive to Bongao wharf from Zamboanga City is almost daily. There are at least four vessels operating to this island. Out of that four only a vessel directly travels from Zamboanga City to Bongao, the rest have to pass by Jolo, Siasi and to Sitangkai after it docked at Bongao’s pier.  Airplane is also operating to this island twice a day with reasonable prices. There are also lansa and Jungkung operating from Bongao to Sandakan, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu and Tawau. Most of the lansa and Jungkung were bringing in commodities from Sabah.

Even Bongao is not that develop in terms of buildings and other infrastructure; on its town you can have an easy access to the internet in various cybercafé, withdraw money from banks, western union and lhullier. “The only thing that hinders the development in Bongao is due to insufficient fund from the Philippine government” according to Filipino Governor Sadikul Sahali.

There are also restaurant operating in Bongao serves western foods but most of the locals are patronizing local delicacies such as Pastil, Satti, Bang-Bang Sug, Halo-Halo, Piyutu, Siyanglag and other Tausug food. I could not forget the restaurant in Awal Street which serves delicious halo-halo and pastil.

The business of the people of Bongao is mix. The people who have no enough money to upgrade their business were just selling fishes, vegetables, cooked foods, fruits and other things in the market. While the well off are the one who bought the products brought by the islanders to Bongao.

I hope someday, this slow develop town would become a busiest island city, where it has an international airports, international wharfs, and become like Singapore having toll ports between Bongao and Sibutu [Prof. Adil idea] where the foreign vessels use to pass daily. All these are impossible under the corrupt administration, the current government, but it is possible to the government of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam, Insya’Allah.

May Allah uplift the status of the destitute in Sulu Archipelago once the SSDI fully implementing the De facto government.

Visit Tawi-Tawi!

Siasi is one of the busiest Islands in the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam. This place has its own historical background to proud of. Its dwellers are mostly Buranun, Samal, and some Chinese and Bisaya.

As the vessel passed by this beautiful Island Habib Sakiral’s relative, who was a devoted supporter of MNLF struggle, texted us to pay visit to his home in North Laud Siasi. Hadji Jamal is among the active advocates of MNLF cause. But when MNLF leaders failed to realize the promises to the people, Hadji Jamal decided to live a normal life as what the general masses are doing.

In his home, this old fellow impressed me with his strong dedication to “Maksud” [cause]. He is educated about Islam and western education, currently serving the self run Madrasah as a chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The business brought us there was the idea about the restoration of the Sultanate of Sulu. Habib Sakiral with his adequate knowledge about the Sultanate succeeded to convince Hadji Jamal.  Because the loved for the “Maksud” is there in hadji Jamal’s heart, it didn’t wane.

After hours of discussion and sharing, he invited us to see their Madrasah. I thought this religious institution funded by the local politicians, unluckily it is not. This madrasah taught Sunni creed with Shafi’i jurisprudence.

In the future, Insya’Allah, this madrasah would be turned to formal School under the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam, with a suggested name Sultan Muhammad Aranan Puyo Historical and Law Institute. If Allah permits, we will be visiting hadji Jamal to Siasi to tell him about our suggestion to their madrasah and to the Tausug Citizens over there.

I had crossed almost all beautiful islands in SSDI; they are incomparable gifts from Allah. The picturesque Islands can be found in the Island country of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam would allure tourists especially them who loved nature and deep sea diving.

Mamanuk Island is just an hour via Speed boat from Semporna, Sabah.

SSDI is famous with sea products to name some, the edible seaweed, sea cucumber, Lobster, and other shells which would give handsome benefits to local and international businessmen. Even this country, under the Republic of the Philippines dubbed as the haven of terrorist, I believe once the SSDI fully implemented the De Facto government of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam this negative caricature would be corrected, thus all islands which are strategic would be opened to all tourists regardless of colours, creeds and nationalities.

Who owned this?

SSDI have enough resources to sustain its citizenry and even its neighbouring countries. The Oil alone in the womb of Sulu Sea is more than adequate to maintain the daily needs of the Tausug. Even all Tausug in foreign countries would go home to get their shares the economy of SSDI would not ebb.

Unfortunately, the outsiders are now benefiting the resources in Sulu. And the Tausug are still locked in the state of obscurity and abject poverty. Most of them are just wondering if why the Americans back in their land. Is it about the VIP agreement? Not at all, they are in Sulu for 3G - Gold [Oil, Gold], God [Scientology???], and Global Power. While the Tausug on the other hand are also busy in foreign lands to look also for 3G – Gold [to earn more dollars] Greed [to satiate their desire of wealth] Go to Hell [Imprison because don’t have legal documents to enter other country].

It's a general knowledge that Sulu has huge oil deposit.

As you witness by your naked eyes the glittering white sands in Sulu beaches, you can now arrive to conclusion, what the h*** is happening with the Tausug, irregardless of their social status. “The Tausug are Crazy” as Prof. Bascar once said, as he witnessed the Tausug are striving for a territory which is not theirs.

Here's the banana..Come eat!

The whiteness of the sand resembles the purity of the hearts of the Tausug who doesn’t like to be shackled by any oppressors. Cease not to create havoc in SSDI, oppressors.  Your time is about to end. The true nature of the Tausug – as peace loving creation - shall be loomed to answer all the sufferings and problems faced by Tausug nationals irrespective of their faiths, Insya'Allah.

If you [Philippines] is for Chaos, The SSDI is for Peaceful and Just world!

Habib Ali Al-Jufri is among the defenders of Love for the Prophet Muhammad SAW. The message he delivered on this video would really touch the heart of every devotee of the Glorious man - Prophet Muhammad SAW. How wonderful our world would be should the attitude of beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW is with the Muslim Leaders of today. I was touched,  a camel bow his head to the prophet, just because of what the prophet did to the camel.

Look how the World leaders are now doing to their fellow human regardless of race, color, and belief. There's a countless of hatred happening every day in our lives. The powerful countries invading the weaker states. The oppressed people tremendously persecuted. In the name of document their fellow would be put in jail. What has in paper compare to what has in human? Paper is just made of wood, but Human soul is from ALLAH.

Beware leaders, who adhering blindly, to the dictates of your enemy. One day when the luxuries extracted from you by Allah and give it to the oppressed people you did persecute, back then you would realize how foolish you were.

May Allah guide the Tausug leaders to follow the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad SAW in treating other fellows and other creations. All players in the theater of life will be accounted in consonant with their deeds.

Let's promote love not hatred. The Tausug are very much exhausted with the treatment of their fellows against them. Afraid not! Tausug is constant in the principle, "They are also Human like us".

Ya Allah, guide the people who love to oppress the Tausug, Ya Allah show to them the victory of the Tausug, Ya Allah you are the only Helper that can help the struggle of the Tausug in the Sultanate of Sulu.

Ya Allah afflict us not with bad omens in this world and in the hereafter. Give us courage to build Your government [Darul Islam]. Give us love to treat our fellow human at the time we are at the peak of success.

Ya Allah may your guidance be always with the 34th Sultan of Sulu, PBMM Sultan Bantilan Muizzuddin II and his Ministers and Raayat of the SSDI. Ameen.

Allahumma Salli Wasallim Wabarik Ala Sayyidina Muhammad.

It’s been years Tausug accustomed to make wedding party in renowned hotels.  The typical reason, in the so called place everything has set in order.  Thus, it could lessen the burden of a family in arranging, borrowing, entertaining just to make the event grand. How thick would be the money given to the coordinator for the service fee, the merrier or attractive would become the wedding party?

Last time I attended a wedding party of a friend conducted in one of the top hotel in Zamboanga City. I was told that the money spent for the wedding coordinator to arrange the party was quite big amount.

Well, the program was delightful after the coordinators doing her part but there was something I was looking for right after the event. I don’t care how much amount been spent by the groom or bride. But I do care about the uniqueness of the event conducted. The thing I do care about is how a coordinator could offer something for the groom and bride an ambiance, costume and practices which is relevant to their faith and culture.  What I frequently observed, the coordinator were only doing her part to realize what the groom and bride wish for their wedding.

Here are some practices which always inserted in the Tausug wedding.

  • Walking up the Aisle
  • Drinking Wine [usually the coordinator replaces it with cola or

    something for the Muslim]
  • Cutting of Cakes
  • Flower Girls

Culturally speaking, the practices mentioned above are alien to Tausug Wedding culture. However due to modernity, which usually become the reason, the mentioned practices are now inserted into Tausug wedding.

The culture of a Tausug is rich with practices and rituals most especially the wedding ceremony. In the Tausug - Buranun custom the first thing to do on a wedding day is the Magligu’ Pangantin – both groom and bride is to be bathed early in the morning. This ritual play a vital role in the family life of a couple, thus it can’t be skipped or do it not in accordance with the tradition. During the ritual there must be a Maglulugu’ to sing a song for the bride or the groom. The song sings by the maglulugu’ is in a form of langan or lullaby which has a connection with that ritual bathing.

Eating Panyam instead of Cake. Oarmata-Jainal Wedding [this photo was taken from their blog]
As the bride and groom done the first activity the next task they would be accoutred by the make-up artist. On this level if to follow strictly the custom, the groom and bride faces must be filled with white dot which signifies their face paint. For beauty wise almost all Buranun and other tribes do not anymore cling to this adornment. On this part, the coordinator should have a sensitivity towards other Muslims who doesn’t like to be embellished by gay.

Afterwards, the groom and his family will go to the bride house for Magbassa’ Kawin and Magbassa khutba’ Kawin [Reading Kawin ceremony and delivering khutba for the bride & groom]. The arrangement of the activities after the magligu’ and dressing up the bride and groom are the Magpassal, Magkawin, Magba’tal, Maggiling, Magkaun, Magsanding and Maglami-lami. The magpassal which literally means colouring the nail with henna is a serious part for the family of the bride. The groom’s family who undertake the magpassal must have knowledge of it and off course still have both mother and father.  The magpapassal or the one who do the magpassal must also be accompanied with maglulugu’.

Magkawin or Magbassa Kawin. Photo by Lujille Wheng
The Magkawin or Magbassa Kawin is to be done by the Imam, the groom together with his family and bride’s family who witness the ritual. After Magbassa  kawin the sermon or khutba would be delivered by the Imam or Ustaz. After this ritual, the groom will be guided by the Imam accompanied by the maglulugu’ to enter the bride’s room for performing the Mag-ba’tal. During the magba’tal the groom is instructed by the imam to touch his thumb at the bride’s forehead. While doing so the room is filled with langan of the maglulugu’. After the magba’tal the groom and bride will ask to sit side by side, then there’s two person man and woman [having mother and father] at their back to move them to each sides.  Just after the Maggiling the couple will then ask to eat the food served on the Dulang Pagtiyaunan. To eat food, on this part, is unlike we eat in the usual day.  There are steps to be observed by the couple enable to follow the custom, I’m sure there is always behind the custom and tradition. The other part is the Magsanding and then the maglami-lami or wedding party.

To summarize the activities on the Tausug wedding [this part is only
for Buranun and Arab [Sharif] tribes] these are:

1. Magligu' Pangantin
2. Magari-ari
3. Magpassal
4. Magkawin
5. Magba'tal
6. Maggiling
7. Magkaun sin kakaun ha Dulang
8. Magsanding
9. Maglami-lami - These practices can be developed even the wedding is to be conducted at the hotel. Venue is indeed not a reason for not practicing this custom, which in fact all Tausug was used to do that. Unfortunately they only failed to give more value to it. To me, by just practicing a custom without giving prominence - by not inserting something foreign into it - is a form of corruption to Tausug culture.  Every Tausug [the Buranun and Sharif in particular] has to preserve their culture and make the wedding custom as attractive as they are during the wedding day.

This is no prejudice. "All Tausug" is the Philosophy of the Tausug bloggers who have deep concerned for the future of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam and its people, the Tausug. Before Sulu Archipelago illegally annexed to the Philippines, national pride was not zoomed by the people dwelling within the territory by that time. For the influence of Islam, which recognizes no national territory and adhering to the divine knowledge which says "only the best among you the one who excel in Taqwa [Fear]". Perhaps in the past the pride of being a national of this and that country was not yet reaches its zenith. Because Nusantara back then was dwelled by any colours and nationalities even without passport or national identity to show. However, the existence of Tausug National Identity can be traced back during the time of the first Sultan of Sulu [Sultan Shariful Hashim] should it become our primary concern through the process of reinstalling the Sovereignty of the Sultanate of Sulu.

Tausug is not a name of a tribe of the people dwelling in Jolo who speak the Bahasa Sug but it's a Nationality of all people living within the territory of the Sultanate of Sulu if we tend to adopt the nation-state concept. All tribes such as the Buranun, Samal, Bajau, Yakan, Jama Mapun, Mulbug, Kalibugan, Bisaya, Chinese, and other tribes currently residing within the territory are therefore a Tausug.

This is not about to glorify the Tausug which regarded by many as one of the tribes in Sulu but to realistically put all things in order. How come a Sultanate of Sulu governed the entire Sulu Archipelago for almost 400 years if it had no national identity?

In short, this is the way how we look at this thing. Either our brothers and sisters out there seem to disagree with this idea, we don't care.  We are promoting the Tausug not because it is our tribe. I myself, my tribe is a Buranun with mixed Arab [Sharif]. With this confession, where could I insert the Tausug in my life? What if you say also the same as mine or perhaps you are a Samal mixed Yakan? What single identity we must adopt then in order for the people outside Sulu call us by just a name or an identity? In short, as far as Sultanate of Sulu is concern our unifying identity is the TAUSUG - hence, All Tausug.

Islam reached the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam through the effort of Ahlul Bayt [Household of Prophet Muhammad]. The softness of Islamic teachings they preached among the Tausug had converted the locals to the Religion of Allah, Islam. This religion is contains not only a matter of belief but a way of life which every Muslim must practice it in accordance with Prophet Muhammad teachings found in the Qur'an, Hadith and exemplified by his Ahlul Bayt which most of them are Wali Allah.

I bear witness there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Messenger and Prophet.

Thanks to the Makhdumin [a group of Muslim Missionaries] and the Sharaif and Sayyed. We are the living witness to the radiance of Prophet Muhammad Teachings. It is shone in the entire Archipelago, if not because of this light, the Muslims in the Sultanate of Sulu are now professing other faiths. Thanks to the Karamah endowed by Allah to his friends [The Wali Allah], which can still be witnessed in the tombs of the Sayyed and Sharaif scattered through out the Island country of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam.

This karamah have been experience by the ancestors of the Makhdumin, the Alawiyyin, and other Sayyed in Sulu. The Ahlul Bayt in Sulu are the holder of the Prophet divine knowledge. Only there present still opaque to their relatives [the Ahlul Bayt] in Yemen, Indonesia, Malaysia and other Countries. Should you want to prove this statement pay visit to Sulu and seclude in one of their mountains. By then, if Allah will, you can experience as what Tuan Gulam Hassan Albikangi said when he visited Jolo, "A month seclusion in Mt. Kinabalu can be achieved ten days in Mt. Tumantangis".

Pay visit to Sulu oh our brothers Habaib! Pay visit to Sulu Oh the Secrets of Allah! Pay visit to Sulu oh Mashaik! Come, until the fruits of our ancestors still beaming like a sun.  Afraid not the enemy of Islam for there are angels send by Allah to protect us. If you believe Islam will be reigning once again, show to us the loving mercy of Allah. Don't look only to the Mideast and America, you must also turn your eyes to the Island which your ancestors sowed the knowledge of Ma'rifa.

Please come back ya Habibi!

We are almost lost and misguided by the pretenders from afar fortunately the beckon of Sheikh Makhdum which he lighted in 1380 awaken us and guide us back to the mainstream [Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaah] alhamdulillah.

We are patiently standing by the forceful accusation of our brothers to say this and that to our ancestors. This ingratitude person seem to forget, who are they by now anyway, if the foundation of faith of our ancestors to Islam is not firmed.

Please Come Back ya Habibi!
